Electric Cello V2

Electric Cello V2:

Build Vision:

With some very light experience building some classical string instruments, I immediately knew I wanted to build another one when I saw the Ibanez Upright Bass. Just like how the Yamaha Electric Cello inspired me to build my own, I saw the design language of the Upright Bass and knew I had to try my hand at it. Prior to finding the Ibanez Upright Bass, I had seen the NS Electric Cello and wanted to build something with the same form factor, but I wasn't quite inspired. Ibanez's design was enough to get me inspired and my plan now is to basically make a smaller version of Ibanez's Upright Bass while pulling inspiration from the NS Electric.

Scale Length:

The first thing I noticed on the Ibanez Upright Bass was that the individual bridges determined the scale length of the Bass. Upon doing more research, I found that the scale length of the Upright Bass was the same as a standard Bass guitar (34"). When doing research for Cellos, I found that the scale length for a cello was 695 mm. I won't be making the cello the same scale length as a guitar or bass guitar and will instead stick with the standard 695 mm scale length since this is what NS Designs did for their cello. However, I am going to use individual bass guitar bridges like Ibanez as this would allow me to secure and position the strings at the right height and at the right scale length. Taking inspiration from Ibanez, I will remove the need for a wood bridge entirely and place the individual bridges at the proper scale length positions. This makes for a cleaner look, easier setup, and removes complexity from the build. Similar to Ibanez, I can contour the body to match the curvature of the wooden bridge and achieve the proper arch needed for a cello.

Endpin:

Like my first electric cello, I will include an extending endpin in the design. I plan to use a carbon fiber rod for this and will find a way to make the design of the cello cohesive.

Electronics:

Options:

Piezo or Pickups

Volume and Tone Knobs

3 Band EQ Preamp

Ibanez UB804

NS Cello

Ibanez Mono Rail 5 Bridges:

The Upright Bass uses these individual bass bridges from Ibanez. It was very hard for me to source these so I will be going with a cheaper alternative.

JD Moon Bass Bridges:

I found these individual bass guitar bridges on Amazon. They were the nicest looking bridges while being very, very well priced. I will give these a shot.

3 Band EQ Preamp:

I'm not sure how good this preamp is considering its $22, but I'll give it a chance. As much as I enjoyed the very nice Bartollini Bass Preamp in my previous cello build, I want to have a nice working cello before I upgrade to a nicer preamp.
